Women in Law Enforcement Sample Essay

Women in Law Enforcement Sample Essay

Today women play a substantial role in and are a respected part of the law enforcement agencies. However, this did not happen without a lot of hard work. During medieval times, at the training camps, ladies were not given equal rights as men and had lower targets for physical ability. For instance, they were not allowed to shoot shotguns. However, this has significantly changed in the recent past as more women are now incorporated in the military and the police.

I think that societal beliefs about the roles of women in society played a pivotal role in why the majority of women were not allowed to serve in the military and police forces. Traditionally, society believed that women were supposed to fill roles as camp followers and supportive spouses, mothers, and wives (Celis, Kantola, Waylen, & Weldon, 2013). The few who were allowed to join careers in the criminal justice system were not allowed to become violent participants but instead were only allowed to operate as amateur sleuths and detectives (Mc Laughlin, 2015). For instance, they were not allowed to shoot shotguns. However, the number of females working in the criminal justice system escalated significantly as a result of societal alterations in attitudes and perceptions about the roles of women in society. I also concur with the fact that crime fiction can play a substantial role in promoting women into high positions of power in society. Crime fiction showcase that if given a fair playing ground, women can perform better in perceived male-dominated careers such as the military and police forces (Celis, Kantola, Waylen, & Weldon, 2013). Besides, increased women activism in most parts of the world plays a pivotal role in the intense changes in approaches to gender roles.

In conclusion, I think that societal beliefs about the roles of women in society played a pivotal role in why the majority of women were not allowed to serve in the military and police forces. Besides, crime fiction and increased women activism can play a substantial role in promoting women into high positions of power in society.
