Week 6 dq1 response 3 449
Hello Professor and Classmates,
As we have learned, effective communication is essential in working with clients. As Hepworth et al.(2016) express, social workers utilize communication skills in order to help develop a productive working relationship with clients. Moreover, a core skill that enables the social worker to have this positive relationship with clients is empathy. In creating a helping relationship, “conveying empathic understanding reduces the level of threat perceived by the client and mitigates his or her defensiveness, conveys interest and helpful intent, and creates an atmosphere conducive to behavior change” (Hepworth et al., 2016). Some strategies to do this include responding to clients feelings without judgment and demonstrating understanding through verbal and nonverbal behaviors. Physical attending skills such as maintaining eye contact, sitting facing the client, and leaning in toward the client can demonstrate care and understanding (Hepworth et al., 2016). Furthermore, verbal following skills such as asking open ended questions and summarizations can also be used to stay with the client and demonstrate empathy (Hepworth et al., 2016). Dear class,
Empathy is the ability of an counselor to see a client’s experience, understand the feelings connected to the experience, and show understanding to the client, which this way causes them to feel appreciated, comprehended, and considered (Hepworth, Rooney, Glenda Dewberry Rooney, & Strom-Gottfried, 2016). It brings about better customer treatment results and to treatment. One of the techniques of showing compassion is by practicing undivided attention. This includes zeroing in on the customer while killing annihilations and tuning in with both the ears and eyes. Like this, the specialist catches both verbal and non-verbal components of the customer’s correspondence, for example, looks and non-verbal communication. Undivided attention is giving the client appropriate criticism, to help them open up. Compassion can belooked at through perceiving the clients feelings. Advisors should initially permit the client to communicate their interests and disappointments before redressing the issue. This causes the clients to feel approved and expands their confidence in the specialist (Hepworth, Rooney, Glenda Dewberry Rooney, & Strom-Gottfried, 2016). Sociology homework help
