These disparities can be attributed to gender inequalities in economic participation and opportunity in the country. In many parts of the world, the U.S included, many women still depend on men for financial assistance. Besides, employed women are less likely to hold high positions of power in organizations compared to men. For instance, women only hold 5.2% of Chief Executive Officers’ positions in the country. Issues related to health and survival affect more women than men in the U.S. This can be attributed to poor access to information and a lack of decision making power which exposes women and especially young girls to sexually transmitted diseases and early pregnancies. Young women in the country also suffer from eating disorders due to media influence on ideal bodies (Bloeser & Ray, 2018). The media makes young women believe that a thin body is the most ideal. As a result, there is an increased prevalence of body dissatisfaction among young women compared to men. To remedy the situation, social groups are actively involved in educating young girls on the importance of self-acceptance through which self-esteem is improved. In the U.S the majority of the population are women. However, the majority of the political seats are held by men who are the minority. For instance, women hold 51% of the country’s population yet they only hold 19% of the Congress positions and 21% of the Senate positions compared to elected white men who hold 67% of all elected offices. Social workgroups, therefore, work to increase the number of women in politics through empowerment and especially financial aid.
In conclusion, women are more likely than men to be living in abject poverty due to low incomes and financial dependence. Besides, issues related to health and survival affect more women than men in the U.S due to a lack of decision-making power. However social groups in the country have adopted various methods to remedy the situation.
