Activity 2: Porter’s Five Forces
Analyze General Electric (GE) using Porter’s Five Forces Model, a standard assessment tool for conducting an industry analysis. You will need GE’s annual and financial reports, which are available from public sources or you can access financial reports and data on ProQuest using the Hoover’s Index. Write a report comprised of the following sections. At least three (3) sources of information are required for this Activity. You must cite all resources used and include an APA-formatted bibliography. (100 points) (A 4-page response is required.)
- Company Description: A description of the company, what the company stands for, what makes it unique, the direction of its market, its products, and the ways in which the company’s products and strategy are integrated.
- Porter’s Five Forces Model: Write one (1) paragraph describing each of the five (5) “forces.”
- Your Analysis: An analysis of GE must include an assessment of the “level” of threat relevant to each force. Refer to your textbook for a discussion of Porter’s approach to an industry analysis. You should also refer to the Required Readings regarding Porter’s Analysis at the appropriate point.
- Overall Assessment: Your paper should end with an overall assessment of GE’s position within the industry and suggestions for the future: what they should watch closely, what they should assess for change, and what they should maintain and build upon.
