I live in the south, where the term “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it†resonates with just about everyone. I am a firm believer in this quote, which was spoken by Thomas Bertram Lance- close adviser to Jimmy Carter- in the 1970s. There are countless legacy products that have become sacrosanct, and will remain untouched and unchanged so as not to change familiarity with customers and destroy their reputation. Some of these legacy products that will remain constant includes the Big Mac- “McDonalds does know that they service close to 550 million of the double-pattied wonders every year in the U.S. alone†(Persaud, 2019). Another is Coca Cola, who claims “More than 1.9 billion servings of our drinks are enjoyed in more than 200 countries each day†(Coca-Cola GB, 2022). The courses test compares being the sacred cow to “Falling in love with what brought you success†(Innovating into Industries and Markets, 2022). My business has become successful by transforming the business into one that is actively seeking opportunity to grow. However, it is important to be alert and weary of the fact that this sort of success and growth isn’t always guaranteed, and I must be prepared to make changes or even make an exit if absolutely necessary. This would not be an simple decision, and is easier talked about ahead of time when business is operating smoothly, but it must be discussed. While our company provides a service rather than the sale of products, it is more challenging to pursue new markets due to the nature of the business. The majority of our equipment is tailored to the type of work we do, and was expensive to purchase and organize. Despite this, there are a few sub-categories our business can enter, including window cleaning and junk removal, while still offering pressure washing as a main business and focal point.
